THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

The body suit is tight fitting. Temp wrinkles his nose at the sensation, tugging at the built in gloves. His last suit has been pretty well destroyed during the battle to Dewford. This was his first time in the new one. It wasn't broken in properly. [break][break]

This place was new to him. The hazy yellow sky felt off. The air tasted like thick summer pollen and smelled like hospital cleaner. Sickly with a false sweetness. [break][break]

"What's the plan?" Glancing over the horizon, Temp turned his head back to glance between Cillian Quinn, Yumi Hasegawa, and Hitoshi Inoue. [break][break]

Next to him, Bongo crossed his arms and took up the same pose. The Zarude glowered down at Yumi and Hitoshi in particular, unfamiliar.

Hitoshi doesn’t know the plan. He doesn’t pretend to know what’s going on. There is no delusion of deeper meaning or significance. A blade exists to cut. He cuts. Literally and metaphorically. His answer to the question is the song of a sailing sword. It cuts a path forward for the rest of them.[break]
It cuts clean through the dense jungle canopy. Bamboo is cleaved with a satisfying crunch. The perpendicular cuts make the bamboo tumble. What follows is not on him, he simply goes where Yumi leads. One of his fellows is an underboss - someone even Yumi, end all be all of his world, is beholden to. How this figure fits into the ecosystem of his life, Hitoshi doesn’t know. If Yumi’s word is gospel, what word can be used to describe whatever orders that man gives?[break]
Thankfully, swords don’t have to think. They simply have to cut.[break]
“Beats me.” Hitoshi says with animated apathy. Just words to fill empty air. Caught between the roles of sword and dog, he yaps.

Cillian had once been nothing but a sword, an extension of Rocket's arm. It had been cadis von klaussner to raise him up to something more, to give a voice to something that had long been silenced. Still, he remembers the purpose he'd once held. Still held, whenever declan walsh saw fit to wield his steel against their enemies.[break][break]

So, though he is unfamiliar with Hitoshi Inoue, a silent respect is felt toward him. An unspoken kinship.[break][break]

He understands his purpose now as one of leadership, the guide they all look to when Tempest Quinn asks after a plan.[break][break]

It's his first time in the Crater, too. But Cillian can't show weakness with their eyes upon him. Yumi Hasegawa could doubtless understand the crushing weight of expectations, the fear of not being good enough.[break][break]

"Our first order of business is to set up camp. There have been other camps established in the Crater, but not in this direction. We'll want to look for a location with natural defenses suitable in fending off the Ultra Beasts."[break][break]

His golden gaze cuts across the bamboo with the sharpness of Hitoshi's sword.[break][break]

"Known predators in this area include Celesteela and Kartana."[break][break]

Lugia circles overhead as the ground trembles underfoot, the frequent earthquakes forcing an occasional pause in their progress.

Yumi listened carefully to Gavin's instruction — or Cillian's, as he called himself now. It didn't matter. He was still an underboss. Moreover, she had survived the horrible nature of the Ultra Deep Sea thanks to his leadership. He'd gained her respect from that alone.[break][break]

She peered through the bamboo. The thick forest of it reminded her of home, so she was unsurprised to catch a glimpse of buildings between the stalks. They looked like homes, part of a countryside village.[break][break]

"What about over there?" Yumi suggested, pointing. The buildings were close enough; their expedition group could reach them in fifteen minutes, assuming they continued to walk in a straight line. Naturally, obstacles might make the trip longer.[break][break]

While Lugia flew overhead, Yumi's Seviper slithered on the ground alongside the humans. Gesshoku's red eyes gleamed in the dark undergrowth, keeping watch for danger.

Hitoshi Inoue moves forward, blade slicing at the bamboo. They clatter to the ground. Yet, Temp frowns. That wasn't the hollow thump one would expect when they crashed. Cillian Quinn gives them order and Yumi Hasegawa spots a suitable area to explore.[break][break]

It strikes Temp as odd that there would be anything resembling man-made in this place. Had people lived here before?[break][break]

But for now he walks over to one of the stalks of Bamboo, leaning down to examine the slice.[break][break]

It's clean, Hitoshi must have been good with that sword, but that isn't what strikes Temp as off. The whole thing is packed tight full of... crystals? Temp didn't know what the fuck they were. Just little bits of rainbow colored stone. A shard of one fell out and Temp picked it up, finding it familiar.[break][break]

"This is a fucking mega stone."[break][break]

He holds the piece in his hand, glancing back inside the bamboo.[break][break]

"Can you cut a smaller piece of this for me? I want to take it back to the lab when we leave." Is asked of Hitoshi.[break][break]

Yet, when Temp stands up, he doesn't notice his foot brushes against a suspect 'bamboo shoot'.

A legend flies above his head and he pays no mind. Monsters warped outside of human understanding lurk within this crater, under its yellow sky, and he doesn't notice. These concerns are worthless to a blade. His whole world consists of wherever he is pointed, whatever needs to be cut down or killed. Meaning is something ascribed by humans and their incessant need for something deeper than the here and now. He moves. He acts. He listens.[break]
The being that exists above his world gives an order and Yumi agrees. She takes the unworked iron of the underboss's suggestion and beats it into the shape of a practical plan. Over there works fine. Hitoshi will cut down all the stalks within this forest and whatever horrors it holds to deliver her over there.[break]
One foot goes to move in front of the other before the first one that spoke speaks again, calling for the blade's attention and asking him to cut. With a shrug, he does what is asked of him. A blade that can't cut is truly a worthless object.[break]
"Sure thing, bud--" His animated voice drains of its life mid-sentence. Amber eyes lock onto his katana. It's caught mid-air on its trajectory towards its destination. From where he's standing, he can hardly see the thing that blocked the strike.[break]
"Tcejbo sselhtrow a tuc evah I ,niaga ecno." A voice growls. Hitoshi sees it at last, a red slip of paper no larger than its hand. Retracting his blade, he sees the creature float in the air. Two more join it.[break]
He hates the rules of this place, their world. He hates these creatures, Pokemon. By merit of existing, he can't do his job. Without resorting to playing the game by their rules, he can't keep Yumi safe.[break]
Still, he has to admit...[break]
"Man, that thing is cool!!!" Hitoshi shouts with gusto. "Jubei, get out here and kill him for me!" A dark knight wreathed in flames as bitter as the blade's sentiment leaps from a pokeball. He levels his bitter blade at the front runner of the back and aims to cut him down.

It was not the bastion of strong defenses he'd hoped for, but if the structural integrity of the homes had not been compromised then it might serve as a suitable forward operating camp to which they could retreat for shelter.[break][break]

"We'll check it out."[break][break]

But before they can make their way to the abandoned village, chaos erupts in the bamboo around them.[break][break]

His eyes narrow. He'd seen one of these creatures before, in the possession of Raziel Beckett. That alone makes him despise them. It looks like paper. That alone gives him the idea to set it ablaze.[break][break]

From his belt, a luxury ball is retrieved.[break][break]

From its haven comes a Delphox that waves her wand at the click of Cillian's tongue, casting a gout of brilliant purple SHADOW FIRE toward the offending Ultra Beasts.

The bamboo forest erupted with chaos. Flames from Hitoshi's Ceruledge and Cillian's Delphox lit up the immediate area and filled it with searing heat. Yumi stumbled backwards, trying to avoid getting burned.[break][break]

Unfortunately, she tripped on the same small object rooted into the ground that Temp's foot had touched. Balance lost, Yumi fell hard on her backside. "Fuck! Owwww!" she hissed, tears stinging her eyes.[break][break]

Shockingly, the object wailed, too.[break][break]

Yumi stared, her pain momentarily forgotten, as the thing — no, the baby Pokémon — emitted an unnatural cry. A sudden fluttering filled the air, like the wind rustling leaves. Or the crinkling of a thousand sheets of paper.[break][break]

Without warning, a swarm of small, white-and-red Pokémon appeared as if out of nowhere. Yumi could not possibly count how many. They collectively raised their tiny arms and attacked the group with NIGHT SLASH.[break][break]

The woman screamed, throwing her hands up to cover her face, just as her Seviper countered the swarm with GLARE.

Hitoshi Inoue was a sword. Temp was a shield. Where Hitoshi was loyal to Yumi Hasegawa, Temp was loyal to Cillian Quinn. But he was closer to the woman when she fell but by virtue of also being on the ground. Not wanting a valued ally hurt, Temp snarled and darted towards her. Like an animal hunched over, raising an arm to help shield his body with hers. [break][break]

A pointed look was given to Hitoshi. [break][break]

I will protect yours if you protect mine. [break][break]

The Nigh Slashes rained down. Death by a thousand cuts. [break][break]

A rock crashes to the ground in the middle of the swarm. Many scatter on the wind before they could do too much damage. Bongo, who had been following, gives out a high pitched war cry. The Zarude towers over his Trainer and Yumi, as if daring more attacks his way.

Hitoshi feels his heart leap to his throat in the moment when he thinks he will be too slow to reach her. Another rushes in and blocks for her. In that moment, this dark-haired man, whose name he does not even know, is loved wholly and unconditionally in a way only a dog can love something. To put that much value on her life, too...[break]

As Yumi Hasegawa falls and Tempest Quinn jumps to her defense, it is left to Cillian and Hitoshi Inoue to press the offensive. With the aid of Temp's Zarude and Yumi's Seviper, origami blades are melted with fire and acid, entombed in falling rock.[break][break]

Stillness settles uneasily over the bamboo jungle.[break][break]

I hate this place.[break][break]

Having heard Yumi's scream, Cillian goes now to check on her. He offers a hand to help her up from where she'd fallen.[break][break]

"Are you all right?"[break][break]

She was undoubtedly the most fragile among them, but Cillian's vision of Rocket will always be the strong defending their weak.[break][break]

To that end, Cillian sends out his Lucario. At a click of the tongue, the jackal slams its spiked paws together, LIFE DEW scattering like light rain. It settles cold against the skin, soothing aches and restoring strength.[break][break]

"The fighting may attract more. We need to move, quickly." His gaze snaps to Hitoshi, then to Yumi and Temp. Yumi might not be much of a fighter, but she'd proved observant enough by spotting the village before the others. "We'll take point. You two cover our six."[break][break]

Still on overwatch, Lugia casts a large shadow as she pulls ahead to circle the village.

Yumi readily accepted Cillian's hand, not embarrassed in the slightest by her obvious fragility. She had not been trained for physicality but for cleverness and keen observation. Such traits were never a weakness.[break][break]

"I am, thank you. And thank you too, Mr. Quinn." The last part, she directed at Temp.[break][break]

Brushing the dirt off her skirt, she nodded her gratitude to the Lucario as well. Then she flashed Hitoshi a small, reassuring smile. She might have some superficial scratches and a bruised bum, but it was nothing for him to worry about.[break][break]

The group proceeded toward the village, picking their way around small ditches and large boulders. Eventually, they arrived at its edge. Bamboo had been cleared away to form a quiet sanctuary. The homes themselves were wooden, dark, and silent.[break][break]

Yumi did not like the way her skin crawled with foreboding. "Does it look safe to you?" she asked the men, who were clearly more keyed in to danger than she was.

They press onwards. Bongo vanishes back into the brought above, swinging from vine to vine in true jungle fashion. While the Zarude could not fly as high as Lugia could, he did his best to keep pace with her.[break][break]

Yumi Hasegawa poses her question.[break][break]

"Only one way to find out."[break][break]

It was rash of him, Temp knew, but he pushed forward and opened one of the doors. It stuck, as if something was blocking it from the inside, but a rough shoulder shove and it screeched open. Pulpy goo spread from under the frame, causing Temp to frown.[break][break]

From the inside a meaty, sour, sugar sweet smell rolls out in waves. It's potent enough to catch Temp, still in the doorway, off guard enough to gag. He makes to step back- only for a thick vine to emerge from the darkness. It wraps around his waist and pulls him inside. Temp yelps and grabs for the door, nails digging into the wood. It the end his grip fails and the doorway is jerked open further.[break][break]

This reveals... victreebell.[break][break]

At least a half dozen of them. They're huge, taking up space where they're wrapped to the walls inside. A few of them are lazy; leaves closed and sated as they eat. But the one that has Temp is trying to pull him into it's mouth. He would fit easily; which is terrifying.[break][break]

If they shine the light right, what remains of something vaguely human can be seen in one's stomach, dissolving.[break][break]

Temp is grunting as he grips the pokemon's 'mouth', pushing away and kicking to try and free himself.[break][break]

The noise and movement causes more to stir from deeper in the house, the vines on the floor ratting as shifting as they seek out Yumi, Cillian Quinn, and Hitoshi Inoue.[break][break]

For Temp's part, he looks more pissed off than truly worried.
